KIWI AND DOGS
A peaceful coexistence is possible when one understand the threats that dog can be to adult kiwis.
Any dog, of any ag or breed can be a threat to a young and adult kiwi. A kiwi doesn’t have a protective breastplate like other birds have, therefore even a gentle touch from an inquisitive dog could injure or kill a kiwi.
The best option is to keep your dog under control at all times, on a lead, off-leash at a designated dog park, contained in a kennel your garden or indoors at night.
Tips for a peaceful coexistence:
If you live in an area where kiwi live, always don't let your dog roaming.
Keep it tied up, in a kennel or inside at night.
Keep it on a lead when walking in areas where kiwi and other wildlife exist and browse, like beaches where birds nest.
Exercise your dog in public dog parks or designated dog-friendly locations.
Be aware of and follow any bylaws about dogs in the areas you live and visit.
If you see a sign that says dogs are prohibited from entering that area, obey it.
